Music doesn't just soothe the savage beast; it also has superpowers that can improve health. Here's why guitars and drums are becoming medical equipment in hospitals and homes across the country. (jelena jovanovic, hitdelight - Fotolia)

Music has charms to soothe a savage beast, soften rocks or bend a knotted oak, English playwright William Congreve famously wrote. But it also has superpowers that can improve your family's health.

Listening to music can reduce pain, help patients with dementia recover memories, and help stroke victims learn to walk again. Making musiccan lower blood pressure and alleviate stress. Accumulatingevidence of music's power to improve health outcomes has spurred hospitals and other medical facilities to employ musicians and music therapists, turning guitars and xylophones into medical equipment.

Massachusetts General, the largest hospital in Boston, employs four music therapists to work with patients and recruits professional musicians for live performances in waiting rooms and lobbies. Its environmental music program has been enthusiastically received by employees and families who say encountering live music in a hospital instantly improves the experience, said Lorrie Kubicek, a board-certified music therapist at the hospital.

Something seasonal:
Aint no chimney in the projects:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3jvDeHLkgo
and the lyrics of course

Lyrics:
When I was a child, I used to wonder
How Santa put my toys under the tree
I said, "Mama, can you tell me how this can be
When there ain't no chimneys in the projects?"

Ain't no chimneys in the projects (not in the ghetto)
Not in the projects
Ain't no chimneys in the projects

Mama sat me down and said, "Baby, Santa Claus does magic things."
As soon as you're asleep, a chimney will appear
And in the morning you will see all he brings.
Don't you worry that there ain't no chimneys in the projects."

Ain't no chimneys in the projects (not in the ghetto)
Not in the projects
Ain't no chimneys in the projects

Now I'm all grown and I see
It wasn't Santa who got that magic done
Mama, now I know you were the one
There ain't no chimneys in the projects

Ain't no chimneys in the projects (not in the ghetto)
Not in the projects
Ain't no chimneys in the projects
